Mount Pleasant's Tremendous Growth = New Schools

Because Mount Pleasant grew so fast, the Charleston county school district had to make plans for new schools. Even before the new Wando High School was finished, the need for a second High School was already being felt.

Moultrie Middle School and Mount Pleasant Academy are currently under construction and should be open by fall 2009. The district plans to start construction on a new Whitesides Elementary School slated to open in 2010.

A new Jennie Moore Elementary School and Laing Middle School and the creation of a second high school are also in the district's future capital improvement plans.

According to the Post and Courier,

"Bill Lewis, school district chief of operations for capital programs, said additional land has been purchased at the Jennie Moore Elementary site to make room for a new Laing Middle School. The schools would share campuses, just as Cario Middle School and Charles Pinckney Elementary School do in Park West. But the district has yet to identify funding to build a new Laing".

Moultrie Middle School and Mount Pleasant Academy students are currently using the old Wando High School campus. When those students move into their new buildings next fall, old Wando would be available for swing space, making way for the Jennie Moore and Laing campus to be built.

Childrens Day Festival in Park West Neighborhood Mt Pleasant SC

"The fun-est day of the year" according to my daughter will be help October 19Th. The annual Children's Day festival will be held at the Mount Pleasant Parks and Recreation Fields in Park West Subdivision. The festival is free except for food purchases. The food booths are ran by local schools and all proceeds go towards their PTA. Last year over 25,000 was raised. This year's theme is "GO green and be patriotic". All rides, crafts, face painting, pony rides, inflatables are free. There will also be dance and music performances.
This year's event is scheduled for Sunday, October 19Th, 12 noon - 5:00 p.m. So bring your family and have a good time. We hope to see you there.

Mount Pleasant, SC has a hidden gem of a neighborhood. It's called Horlbeck Creek. Horlbeck Creek is a community of custom homes with some waterfront lots with docks. It's probably the least expensive waterfront community in the area. The neighborhood was established in the 1990's, however there are still lots available to be built on. The community has a crabbing dock.
The homes that are built are low country style with lots of porches and natural surroundings. All of the homes were built with multi-car parking underneath the home. This gives you tons of extra storage for your boat, kayak and toys. The neighborhood has access to Horlbeck Creek and the sunsets are spectacular.

Taste of Charleston 2008 - Boone Hall Mt Pleasant SC

Because I love to eat, the annual taste of Charleston event at Boone Hall Plantation is my one of my favorite Charleston events. Taste of Charleston has been named one of the “top 20 events in the southeast” by the Southeastern Tourism Society. And when asked visitors of Charleston name the food and the history as the main reasons they visit the area.

This year the event will be held October 10-12. This will be the 28th year Charleston has had this award winning event. The main event will be at Historic Boone Hall plantation, with two other events including a "Iron Chef" competition being held Downtown. Forty of Charleston's best restaurants will be showcased at the event.

The main event will be held on Sunday October 12. Advance tickets ($10) can also be purchased at all Charleston area Applebee's Restaurants, the downtown Visitors Center, or by visiting Boone Hall's web site Day-of tickets can be purchased at the event for $12.00. Food tickets will be sold in $1.00 increments at the event. Souvenir "Taste" t-shirts will also be available for purchase. Free parking inside Boone Hall Plantation. Rain or shine. No pets, no coolers, and no tailgating, please.
